Singing Tryouts - How to Get Picked at Every Audition

Singing tryouts can be a very scary time for an unseasoned singer. They often do everything wrong, and few things right. The key to a singing tryout is to accentuate your positives, and tone down your negatives. An example of this would be American Idol auditions. If you cannot sing like Mariah Carey, do not sing a Mariah Song. That doesn't mean you are a bad singer, that just means you are not Mariah Carey.
They will compare you to her. Is that what you really want? Instead pick a song you know you can nail, Or create a variation of a song you like, but that spot lights your vocal abilities. An example of this is Nora Jones, or Jack Johnson. They do not have high powerful voices, but they are amazing and mellow, tone rich songs. So they use that. Work on your shortcomings in practice, but hide them in an audition. You want to look polished, and perfect. If you are not really good at it, just do not do it. If they are looking for someone with great vibrato, and you do not have a great vibrato, simply say that is not you strong suit. If you do not get it, then it was not meant to be.
Singing tryouts are also more about your presence than most people realize. Pretend you are at a singing audition, and they have narrowed it to 10 really good singers. All of you are good enough for the part, who do they pick? Most of the time, they are going to pick the one who stands out in the right way. How do you stand out the right way at a singing tryouts? Confidence! I know a lot of good singers, that sing like they are in the studio in front of a mic, when they are at an audition. They close their eyes, and look to the ceiling or to the ground. It may feel uncomfortable, but you need to keep your eyes open, and spend a fair amount of time looking at you critics. You gaze, posture, and presence has to say, "Look all you want, I know I have what you are looking for!"; That can be difficult to achieve, but if you get it, you will get a lot of gigs.
Recap for singing tryouts: Do what you are best at, Do it with confidence, and a little swagger, most all be prepared...and prepared to do something you were unprepared for, and above all. DO NOT MAKE ANY EXCUSES. If you are sick, it does not matter to them, they will hear it and ask you if they care. If you are late, you are much better just doing a great audition than explaining why. DO NOT MAKE EXCUSES
